Somali American Rights Coalition Responds to ICE Activity in St. Cloud, Minnesota

Community Faces Fear, Economic Hardship; Coalition Connects Families to Critical Resources
St. Cloud, MN 2/4/2025.

The Somali American Rights Coalition (SARC) expresses deep concern over
recent immigration enforcement activity by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in St.
Cloud and the surrounding region. These federal operations part of the broader Operation Metro Surge
now underway in Minnesota have generated widespread fear, trauma, and economic disruption within
Somali-American and immigrant communities.
Reports indicate that ICE agents have been conducting enforcement actions in and around St. Cloud and
the Twin Cities region without clear communication to local residents or community leaders. These
activities have included stops, detentions, and confrontational interactions that have deeply unsettled
community members and heightened anxiety about personal safety.
Community Impact Mental, Social & Economic

Since these enforcement actions began, many residents in the Somali-American community report a
persistent climate of fear and anxiety. Families are afraid to leave their homes, attend places of worship,
go to work, or participate in everyday social life. This fear has had a direct effect on local businesses
particularly Somali-owned small businesses which have seen dramatic reductions in customers and foot
traffic. Some business owners report losses that jeopardize their ability to pay rent and sustain
operations.

The psychological toll on families has been severe. Anxiety, stress, and worry about potential detention
or disruption of family life have sharply increased, impacting not only adults but children and elders
alike. Community members describe a sense of social isolation, disrupted routines, and ongoing trauma
due to unpredictable federal activity in residential neighborhoods.
Coalition Response & Community SupportIn response to these challenges, the Somali American Rights Coalition is actively working to support
affected families by connecting them with critical resources, including:
Rental assistance programs to help families maintain stable housing during economic disruptions;
Food assistance referrals to reduce pressure on households experiencing income loss;
Mental health and social support services to address fear, trauma, and prolonged stress.
We urge community members impacted by these events to reach out to the Somali American Rights
Coalition for help navigating services and accessing immediate assistance.
